Harbour Week” Carnival
Victoria Harbour is our city’s natural heritage and belongs to all Hong Kong people. It is the duty of all Hong Kong people to pass it on to the next generation undamaged. This unique and special asset is a world renowned tourist attraction and important to Hong Kong’s economy.
To celebrate the Harbour, the three organizations announced the week commencing 6th November 2005 as the first ever “Harbour Week”. Between 6th and 13th November, people are encouraged to visit the waterfront and enjoy and appreciate the harbour. The three organizations hope that a strong message of harbour protection for future generations passes from the people to the Government, and the Government would realize how much the people of Hong Kong cherish their harbour. The Government must reconsider the reclamation work at Wan Chai and Kowloon Bay, and return land reclaimed from the harbour to the public for their enjoyment.Inappropriate reclamation has to stop.
To promote “Harbour Week” and encourage more people to participate, the three organizations are to launch the “Harbour Week” Carnival at Golden Bauhinia Square, Wan Chai on 13th November 2005. The honourable Mr. Simon F.S. Li will be the officiating guest.
In addition, Mr. Wong Yuk-man and former talk-show host and LegCo member Hon. Albert Cheng will join fellow LegCo member Hon. Alan Leong in a “Chew the rag” discussion where they will share their views on the reclamation and proposed waterfront development.
Ambassador of Harbour Protection, famous singer Miss Joey Yung, will also attend the Carnival and call for Hong Kong people to rally their support behind the harbour protection campaign. Other artists performing on stage will promote the harbour protection message.
LegCo members from different political parties are going to gather at the event to show their support. These include Hon. Ronnie Tong, Hon. Leung Kwok Hung, Hon. Li Wing Tat, Hon. Choy So Yuk and Hon. Lau Chin Shek.
Mr. CHAN Man-yu, Chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council; Dr. Chan Yee Shing; and Mr. Lowell Lo, Environmental Protection Activist and former singer, and Mr. Bottle Shiu, representative from Social Work sector will also attend.
To promote the Harbour Protection message to young people, balloons and mobile phone straps will be distributed to children and teenagers. Children are encouraged to dress up in a Harbour-theme fancy dress competition and compete to win HK$1,000. Musicians from the Evangelical Free Church of China - Kong Fok Church are going to express their affections for the Harbour and promote the protection message through music.
LegCo members, Hon. Cheung Man Kwong, Hon. Audrey Eu, Hon. Frederick Fung, Hon. Emily Lau, Hon. Martin Lee and Hon. Margaret Ng, though not in attendance, pledge their support for “Harbour Week”.
At the carnival, game booths will be arranged for the public’s enjoyment. Booths introducing waterfront development and reclamation work will also set up for educational purpose.
