PRESS RELEASE 7 th November 2006

Re: Walk for the Harbour & Harbour Carnival

To encourage the people of Hong Kong especially our younger generation, to appreciate and care for Victoria Harbour, the Society for Protection of the Harbour (SPH), Action Group on Protection of the Harbour, Friends of the Harbour (FOTH) and the United Social Service Centre have organised a ”„Walk For The Harbour' and a ”„Harbour Carnival' to be held on Sunday, 12 th November 2006 in the afternoon. The details are set out in the enclosed poster and leaflet.

The Organisers stress that these events are not political but social, educational and environmental. They will be held in a harmonious and festive spirit to celebrate Hong Kong's good fortune in having such a wonderful harbour. The idea is to follow the example of similar festive events held annually for Sydney Harbour.

In the past 2 months, the Organisers have received enthusiastic support from members of the public. Almost 70 schools have promised to support these events. It is therefore expected that 10,000 people will participate.

Mr Simon F.S. Li, former Judge of the Court of Appeal and a long-standing supporter of the ”„Protect Our Harbour' Campaign, has accepted the invitation to be the Officiating Guest for the Walk and the Carnival. Members of the Legislative Council from different political parties including the Honourable LI Wing Tat, Hon. Alan Leong and Hon. Choy So Yuk will also attend these events.

The popular Miss Vincy, the new Ambassador of Victoria Harbour nominated by our Society and the well-known young pop group ”„Sun Boy'z', will also attend the Carnival to show their support.

Participants who complete the Walk will be awarded a Certificate of Appreciation and a small souvenir. The Organisers will also award three trophies to each section of primary schools, secondary schools and kindergartens with the highest number of students participating in the Walk.

At the Carnival, game booths will be arranged for the public's enjoyment free of charge. Booths introducing the history of Victoria Harbour will also be set up for educational purpose.

There will be a free Harbour Cruise with priority to senior citizens starting from the Hong Kong Dragon Cruise Pier next to Bauhinia Square, Wanchai.

For inquiries, please contact our Miss Mandy Wong at 3101-8191.
